Ana was unable to reproduce her sweet Auckland triumph over Venus Williams as she fell 6-2, 6-1 to the 33-year-old American in the second round of the Dubai Duty Free Championships.
Despite a solid opening game from Ana - which she won to 15 - it was a one-sided contest from the outset as Williams dominated in every facet of the game. The world No.44 did not drop a single point on her first delivery and rifled a cartload of winners throughout the match, while Ana often went for a little too much and lapsed into making unforced errors.
Helped by two consecutive double faults from Ana’s racket in game three, Williams scored a first break of serve which paved the way for an easy victory from the American’s perspective. Williams had to hammer away two breakpoints in game six, but was never really threatened as the match progressed.
Ana looked tired, and a pale imitation of the player who fought brilliantly to beat world No.8 Angelique Kerber less than 24 hours earlier.
After being broken in the opening game of set two, the outcome of the match appeared inevitable. She managed to get on the scoreboard in the third game, but could not prevent Williams from winning four straight games to seal victory in just 56 minutes.
