Ana beats Keys to reach round two

Ana comfortably reached the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open following a 6-1, 7-6(4) victory over world No.44 Madison Keys from the United States.

After a short adaptation period against a player she had never before met, Ana dictated terms during the opening set. She had to save a break point in game three, but thereafter the former world No.1 pushed the American teenager back behind the baseline and dominated throughout. She was deadly efficient on serve and steered the rallies with her forehand. From 1-1, she cruised on to wrap up the first set 6-1 in just 22 minutes.

Set two was much tighter and although Ana scored a break in the third game, she was unable to consolidate her lead. As no further breaks were allowed, the second set eventually entered a tiebreak. The 26-year-old fought back from 3-1 arrears to reel off five points to set up match points, of which she was successful on the second occasion.

Ana said: "It was a really good start for me, despite the fact that I didn't know much about her coming into the match. Also, conditions here are a lot faster than the last few weeks and the ball flies a lot more.

"In the second set it was a lot more close and she did a great job of breaking back. I was really pleased to win the tiebreak."

Ana will face compatriot and world No.40 Bojana Jovanovski in round two. The 22-year-old Serb moved past Italy’s Karin Knapp 6-1, 6-1 on Saturday.
