Ana scored one of the most important wins of her career so far today, when she defeated second seed Patty Schnyder 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the J&S Cup.
Ana came into the match against the world No.8 with a miserable 0-4 head-to-head record, but radiated positivity as she hit a flurry of breathtaking inside-out forehands during the opening set.
The pair traded breaks in the fifth and sixth games, before Ana broke again to move 5-3 ahead, crying ‘ajde!’ as she did so. Ana sealed the set – the very first in nine against the left-hander – on her second set point.
Schnyder was struggling to cope with the pace of Ana’s strokes, while the Serbian more than matched the 27-year-old’s attempts to vary the play.
Ana maintained the momentum she had built up in the first set by breaking Schnyder in the opening game of the second. The game featured an extraordinary point, in which the 18-year-old twice ran down smashes by the Swiss, before winning the point when Schnyder hit a forehand wide.
Impressively, Ana maintained her control of the match and added another break to seal the second set 6-2, and with it a comprehensive victory. The Serbian squealed with delight as she wrapped up her second victory over a top 10 ranked player so far this season.
Ana will face Anna Chakvetadze in the quarter-finals tomorrow.
