Ana cracks Da Vinci code

Ana scored a Valentine's Day win over Italy’s Roberta Vinci in the first round of the Proximus Diamond Games. The 18-year-old triumphed 6-3, 6-3 in her first ever meeting with the world No.43 to record her maiden win in Antwerp.

Despite losing her opening service game, Ana stamped her authority on the match early on, overwhelming her diminutive opponent with a flurry of deep forehands. Vinci did her best to mix things up, approaching the net regularly, but Ana adapted well. She broke in the sixth game to forge ahead 4-2.

Though Vinci broke back immediately the Italian’s serve wasn’t strong enough to hold off Ana’s aggressive return game and the Serbian broke again before clinching the opening set in 27 minutes.

In the second set Ana played with increasing authority and made fewer errors. She regularly ran round her backhand to unleash several signature forehand blows to which the 22-year-old Italian simply had no answer.

Had Ana taken a break point opportunity at 0-2, 30-40 in the second set the match could have been over even quicker. As it happened, Ana was broken for a third time in the following game – the only real blot in an otherwise comprehensive victory – but she never looked in any danger. She sealed victory after 62 minutes and will face fourth seed Nadia Petrova in the second round.
