Ana has slipped one place in the Sony Ericsson WTA ranking list of 16 January. Though she reached the quarter-finals of Sydney last week the Tour’s rolling 52-week ranking system sees the Serbian drop to 22. Ana swaps places with German Anna-Lena Groenefeld.
12 months ago Ana won the Canberra event, for which she received 84.5 ranking points (not including Quality Points, which have since been abolished). Last week’s appearance in the Sydney last eight earned her 49 points, which equates to a deficit of 35.5 and allows Groenefeld, who this week lost in the first round of Sydney, to leapfrog her.
Ana has 62 points to defend from last year’s Australian Open, which begins in Melbourne on Monday. She must reach at least the third round to prevent dropping points.
Elsewhere, Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne’s victory in Sydney’s Medibank International sees her move up two places to No.6 and Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat Ana in Sydney, rises from No.14 to No.11. The top five is unchanged.
