Ana moved through to the second round of the Qatar Total Open with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Tamira Paszek from Austria. The 25-year-old didn't seem bothered by the shoulder injury that kept her out of the Fed Cup tie last weekend as she produced a very dominant display, hitting 20 winners while soaring to victory in just 66 minutes of play.
Paszek, who reached a career-high of 26 in the rankings today, was immediately overwhelmed by Ana’s attacking intentions. The former world No.1 comfortably won her opening service game and earned a break advantage one game later, slightly helped by two double faults from her opponent.
After Ana had added a third straight game, she could have marched into a 4-0 lead, holding two more break points on the Paszek serve, but was unable to convert on this occasion.
However, she didn't pay much attention to that missed opportunity, winning three more games and with them the opening set without really being put to the test by the Austrian.
The opening three games of set two all went against serve, before eventually Ana was the first to consolidate her break with a cunning forehand drop shot.
The sixth game proved crucial to the progression of the match. Although Ana was clearly the better player, some errors slipped into her game and she faced three re-break points while leading 3-2. She got out of trouble in fine style, firing down three first serves and eventually holding to take a 4-2 lead. She added another break herself in the following game, which gave her the chance to serve out the match.
Paszek once more fought back from 40-0 to deuce, but a fourth match point was sufficient for Ana to score a morale-boosting victory.
Ana will face Simona Halep of Romania in the second round on Wednesday after the world No.49 crushed Belarusian Olga Govortsova 6-1, 6-0.
