Ana lost 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to Svetlana Kuznetsova as the Russia-Serbia Fed Cup semi-final ended 1-1 at the close of play on day one.
Jelena Jankovic beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-4 in the opening rubber to give the visitors an early lead.
Ana's match with Kuznetsova, whom she led 6-3 in previous career meetings, was a topsy-turvy encounter.
It began in high class fashion but soon the errors crept into both players' games, especially Ana's. She struggled on both serve and groundstrokes in what was to be frank a messy opening set.
Admirably, Ana turned things around in the second set, hitting 12 winners and 13 unforced errors. She won most of the key points and drew level with the Russian, who had been erratic.
Unfortunately Ana was unable to maintain her momentum. Crucially, Kuznetsova scored a break in the opening game of the deciding set and she held her advantage throughout, winning in an hour and 55 minutes.
Ana is scheduled to take on Pavlyuchenkova in the third rubber on Sunday, with Jankovic facing Kuznetsova before a potentially decisive doubles rubber.
