Ana will face Roberta Vinci in the first round of the Proximus Diamond Games, a Tier II event that begins in Antwerp on Monday. It will be Ana’s first meeting with the 22-year-old Italian, who is currently ranked No.41 in the world.
This is Ana’s second appearance in Antwerp. She qualified then lost in the first round to Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano in last year’s event. Vinci has played the event once before: she lost in the second round of qualifying here in 2004. Vinci’s best ever performance on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour is a semi-final appearance in Eastbourne last year.
Should she overcame Vinci, Ana will play fourth seed Nadia Petrova in the second round. Venus Williams is a potential quarter-final opponent, while second seed and defending champion Amelie Mauresmo could await in the last four.
Ana has been placed in the bottom half of the draw and cannot face the likes of Kim Clijsters, Mary Pierce and Elena Dementieva until the final.
Top seed Clijsters is scheduled to play the winner of Tatiana Golovin and Kirsten Flipkens in her opening match, though the world No.1’s participation is in doubt due to an ankle injury. The most intriguing round one tie round pairs Dementieva, who won last week’s Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, against world No.14 Daniela Hantuchova.
