Ana lost 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 to French world No.28 Alize Cornet in the first round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
It was a demoralising defeat for Ana: she led 6-2, 5-2 and went on to hold a total of five match points. Undone by no fewer than 12 double faults, the 15th seed lost in two hours and 32 minutes.
Ana was in total control of the encounter, but the Frenchwoman launched a comeback as Ana served for the match at 5-2 up in the second set. A tiebreak eventually ensued, during which Ana missed several match points. She lost it 10-8.
It was no surprise that Cornet capitalised on the huge momentum shift and she fended off two break points while serving for the match at 5-4, in what was a thrilling contest.
Bizarrely, Ana ended the match having won more points: 114 to 111.
Ana's next tournament is the US Open in New York, which takes place during August 26-September 7.
