Ana's winning run in the Fed Cup came to an abrupt end as she was defeated 6-1, 6-4 by world No.4 Svetlana Kuznetsova in the opening rubber of the Serbia-Russia World Group I tie.
The 22-year-old made a shaky start and was overwhelmed early on, Kuznetsova dominating from the ground on the way to opening up a 5-0 lead.
It was looking ominous for Ana at this moment, but she got herself on the scoreboard to avoid a whitewash set, and regrouped before the second set.
The second set was indeed a very different story as Ana scored a crucial hold in the opening game. With her home crowd firmly behind her she hit several flashy winners and gained a break in the sixth game to lead 4-2.
The match was very much alive at this moment but Ana was unable to continue her forward momentum. Her serve let her down badly and Kuznetsova was merciless, breaking back and then gaining another break in the ninth game before serving out the match.
Ana will rue her missed opportunity while leading 4-2, while Jelena Jankovic now takes to the court in the tie's second rubber against Russian No.2 Alisa Kleybanova.
