Serbian teen Ivanovic puts Hingis on notice
28 Dec 06
SERBIAN teenager Ana Ivanovic believes she has the wood over five-time grand slam winner Martina Hingis heading into the Australian Women's Hardcourts, which begins at Royal Pines Resort on Sunday.
Ivanovic defeated Hingis in the final of the Montreal Open earlier this year and said she is confident she can repeat that performance on the Coast when the tournament gets under way.
"It helped the confidence," she said.
"Now I feel I can actually play against top players and beat them and compete for a big tournament.
"I played some really good tennis and beat her (in Montreal), so it was an amazing moment for me.
"I grew up watching her winning grand slams and having the opportunity to play against her was already pretty special. For sure she is one of the best players this week."
The 19-year-old said she was impressed with the way Hingis was able to return to form in 2006.
"She definitely came back great, and she was always a great champion and a great fighter.
"And I think it is also very good for tennis."
Ivanovic is sure to be a big drawcard as she is considered one of the sport's rising stars.
She admits it will be a little difficult at first to refocus for this week's tournament considering how close it is to Christmas and the new year.
"The first tournament is always the toughest one," she said.
