Ana made an impressive start to her French Open campaign as she crushed world No.134 Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino 6-1, 6-1. It took the 13th seed just 59 minutes to move past the 20-year-old Spaniard and confidently book her place in the second round.
The former French Open champion was outstanding during her first match here. Despite dropping serve in the second game of the match, Ana was in command from the very beginning. Her groundstrokes were in tune and she exploited every chance to hammer her forehand. She reeled off five straight games and cruised from 1-1 to 6-1 in under a half an hour.
The one-way tennis continued in the second set. Ana outclassed Arruabarrena-Vecino in every facet of the game and quickly earned a double break. The 13th seed looked set to whitewash her opponent in the second set as she led 5-0, 0-30 on the Spaniard’s serve, but Arruabarrena-Vecino ground out her first hold of serve of the match and got on the scoreboard.
The 24-year-old had to serve out the match herself, which she did in emphatic style; she won the game to love, hitting an ace to seal victory after a very accomplished performance.
Ana will face either Canadian Stephanie Dubois or Shahar Peer from Israel in round two on Wednesday.
