Ana is through to the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami after Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano retired while trailing 2-6, 6-2, 3-0.
Ana made a very fast start and broke the Frenchwoman in the opening game, but faced two break points herself and was re-broken straightaway. Razzano, displaying great consistency, cruised into a 5-2 lead and earned two set points on Ana’s serve. The former world No.1 saved them, but a second double fault gave Razzano another set point. She claimed the set after half an hour.
An early break of serve in the second set enabled Ana to establish herself in the match. The 23-year-old held off five break points in the sixth game and held serve to build a 4-2 lead. Ana was far more efficient and converted a break point in the following game. She served out the set in style to level the match.
Ana was up a double break in the decider when Razzano called for the trainer and she eventually was forced to retire, apparently with a thigh injury.
Ana will face either Kim Clijsters or Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in round four on Monday.
She will be action again shortly, teaming up with Andrea Petkovic in the doubles event. The pair take on Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
