Ana's run at the Southern California Open in Carslbad came to an end as she was defeated 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 by Victoria Azarenka.
In what was in truth a scrappy encounter filled with unforced errors from both players, Ana was unfortunate to lose the opening set without winning a game, for she had points to win several, including four break points.
Ana regrouped at the beginning of the second set and broke to lead 2-0. Playing her best tennis of the match, she advanced into a 4-1 lead.
The world No.3 broke back but Ana scored a decisive break when the Belarusian served to stay in the set.
Ana came under immediate pressure on serve in the first game of the third set, but she saved a break point with her first ace of the match - her 19th of the tournament (Ana served more aces in the previous rounds than all three semi-finalists combined).
Ana held on, but she had to face another break point - also saved with an ace - in game three. In game five she was unable to resist Azarenka's pressure and the 25-year-old was broken.
Azarenka added another break to wrap up victory after an hour and 54 minutes.
Ana finished the match with winners-to-unforced errors figures of 31-47, while Azarenka's numbers were 21-31.
Ana heads now to Toronto for the Rogers Cup Presented by National Bank, which starts on Monday.
