Ana produced a consistent display as she saw off the challenge of world No.22 Roberta Vinci in the opening round of the Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions in Bali. The former world No.1 was in control throughout the match and emerged victorious 6-3, 6-3 in 70 minutes.
Ana dictated terms from the very beginning. She raced into a 4-0 lead as she took full advantage of each weaker second delivery from the Italian. Vinci managed to reduce the arrears with one break of serve, but she could not stop Ana from prevailing in the first set.
Ana received medical treatment for her ankle after she stumbled in the early stages of the second set when she was wrong-footed by the Italian. Luckily for Ana, she appeared to be unaffected by the injury during the remainder of the match.
The 23-year-old broke Vinci to love in the fifth game, including two wonderful forehand winners, but was re-broken straightaway. However, a third straight break of serve punctuated Ana’s dominance.
Another forehand winner set up three match points in the ninth game of the set, which she converted immediately to clinch the match.
Ana will face Nadia Petrova of Russia in the semi-finals. The world No.31 beat second seed Shuai Peng of China 6-4, 6-3.
