Ana moves into last eight

Ana saw off world No.199 Coco Vandeweghe in the second round of the Southern Californian Open in Carlsbad, emerging victorious 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 after 99 minutes of play.

There was very little to separate the pair early on. To her credit, it was Vandeweghe who appeared the more aggressive player, dominating the rallies with her flat groundstrokes and big serving.

After trading breaks in games six and seven, the American appeared to score a pivotal breakthrough in the ninth game. She broke Ana for a second time in the set, as the seventh seed served a double fault at the worst possible moment while facing a break point. Nevertheless, the 25-year-old showed great fighting spirit and she managed to enforce a tiebreak, re-breaking her opponent while standing with her back against the wall.

With a 2-5 deficit in the tiebreak, things still didn’t seem very rosy for Ana. However, she turned the tides with some flashy winners and she won five straight points to wrap up the opening set. It proved to be a key moment in the match, as Ana would describe in her on-court interview afterwards.

Indeed after dropping the tiebreak, Vandeweghe was just a shadow of the player she had been during the opening set. It was all too much to handle for the 21-year-old American, as she began making many mistakes as frustration got the better of her. In the meanwhile, Ana displayed greater consistency and raced into a 4-0 lead.

Vandeweghe got three more games on the scoreboard before the seventh seed clinched victory with a classy return winner.

"I'm very happy I won," said Ana afterwards. "It was a very tough match. She came up with some huge serves that were very hard to pick. I'm very happy I was able to turn it around."

On Friday Ana faces an encounter with Italian fourth seed Roberta Vinci, against whom she has a 5-3 head-to-head advantage.

The match is scheduled to take place at 1pm local time (10pm Central European Time; 4pm Eastern Time). Click here for live point-by-point scoring from La Costa Resort & Spa.
