Ana scored a confidence-boosting 6-3, 6-2 victory over Russian world No.26 Alisa Kleybanova in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford. The 22-year-old took just 74 minutes to record victory in her first match since Wimbledon last month.
The manner of triumph was especially encouraging for Ana considering that she had won just eight games in the two matches she'd played against Kleybanova this year.
"I played well," said Ana. "I moved and served well. I didn’t make many mistakes.
"I am really happy to see the things that we have worked on the past month. I am happy with the way I played today.
"I think the biggest thing today was my fitness. I was getting to every ball and managed to keep the rallies going so I didn’t have to pull the trigger too early.
"That put me at ease. I managed to stay strong. She is a tough opponent and I think hard courts are probably her best surface. I am very happy with the victory today."
Ana goes on to meet either fourth seed Marion Bartoli or American Ashley Harkleroad in the second round.
