Ana overcame world No.21 Alize Cornet 7-6(1), 7-5 in the second round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia. It was a hard-fought victory for the 11th seed, who held her nerve in an extremely tight one hour and 47 minute encounter.
The 26-year-old made the better start against the player to whom she suffered a sour defeat in Cincinnati last year (she lost the match after holding five match points) and took a 2-0 lead. After the Frenchwoman had managed to level at 3-3, Ana immediately re-established her advantage and went 5-3 ahead.
At 5-3, the Cincinnati curse appeared to be looming again. Cornet got rid of a set point on her serve and she continued the turnaround by breaking Ana in the following game. The Frenchwoman eventually forced the set into a tiebreak.
In the tiebreak, the world No.13 showed greater consistency. Ana comfortably raced into a 6-0 lead and she wrapped up the set on the second occasion.
Similarly in set two, a tiebreak seemed the most likely conclusion as this time; it was Cornet who was unable to maintain an early break advantage. Ana levelled at 4-4 and no further breaks of serves were allowed until the 12th game.
Cornet had to serve to stay in the match and at this point, the former world No.1 finally scored the final breakthrough, breaking to love and consequently booking her spot in round three.
Ana will meet the in-form Maria Sharapova, who defeated her in the Stuttgart final a fortnight ago, in the third round.
