Ana rises to No.16

In the latest Official Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings, published today, Ana has climbed three places to No.16, which equals her highest ever ranking. Her quarter-final appearance in last week’s Pacific Life Open has also helped Ana rise nine places in the Porsche Race to No.21.

Unsurprisingly, given that she hasn’t played a pairs match since the beginning of February, Ana’s doubles ranking remains at No.95, which is creditable considering she has only seven team ranking events to her name.

The major change within the world top 10 sees Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo move to the top of the rankings despite not competing in Indian Wells. The points Kim Clijsters accrued at the Pacific Life Open last year are removed from her total, thus allowing Mauresmo to move ahead. The other significant change sees Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport swap positions: the Russian, who won Indian Wells, moves from No.5 to No.4.

Ana’s next tournament is the Nasdaq-100 Open, which begins in Miami on Wednesday. Because she is ranked in the world’s top 16 she is guaranteed to be seeded no lower than No.16, which means that she will avoid facing any of the world’s top eight-ranked players until the fourth round at the earliest.

At last year’s Miami event Ana reached her first ever Tier I quarter-final and consequently she has 87 ranking points to defend. The points breakdown in Miami is as follows (all 32 seeded players enter at the second round stage): first round, 1; second round, 19 if first round winner, 1 if direct entrant into round two; third round, 31; fourth round, 48; quarter-finals, 87; semi-finals, 157; runner-up, 246; winner, 350.

The draw for the Nasdaq-100 Open will be made today at 2pm local time (8pm CET). Check back later for news of Ana’s draw.
