Ana sets up Azarenka clash

Ana reached the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open with a highly-skilled 7-5, 6-1 victory over world No.31 Nadia Petrova in 78 minutes. Ana served brilliantly throughout the match as proven by the statistics: she hit seven aces and won 77 per cent of the points on her first delivery.

Petrova made the faster start on the much-discussed blue clay surface and broke Ana in the opening game. However, the 24-year-old quickly found her rhythm, breaking back the Russian before scoring the decisive break in the twelfth game. Both players were on form and consequently the match was played at a high intensity.

Ana continued her fine form in the second set and surged into a 3-0 lead. She added a further break in the sixth game before clinching victory in the next game.

"I was very pleased with my serve today," said Ana. "I was very happy with my overall performance too. I managed to execute a lot of what I had planned, and what I had worked on in practice, so that is very satisfying."

Ana will take on world No.1 Victoria Azarenka from Belarus in round three on Wednesday. The reigning Australian Open champion moved past Andrea Hlavackova 6-3, 7-6(3).

Azarenka has lost just twice this year but Ana boasts a 2-1 head-to-head record against her.
