Ana beat world No.40 Mara Santangelo 7-6, 7-5 to move into the third round of the JPMorgan Chase Open. She completed a hard-earned victory in one hour and 34 minutes.
The 18-year-old made a blistering start, serving two aces and winning the opening two games to love. However, she served two double faults in the third game and was broken back. Serve matched serve for the next nine games before Ana clinched the tiebreak 7-4.
Ana was slightly more dominant in the second set, just as she had been against Vera Dushevina in the last round, and broke the Italian immediately. She was broken back when serving for the match at 5-4 but another break in the following game proved decisive and she held to 15 to seal victory.
Ana hit a total of 13 aces and won 83 per cent of points on her first serve.
She will face No.6 seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld in round three on Thursday after the German beat Akiko Morigami 6-3, 6-2.
Meanwhile, Lindsay Davenport, who was the highest remaining seed in the bottom half of the draw and could have played Ana in the quarter-finals, lost 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 to Samantha Stosur.
