Ana starts brilliantly

Ana began her first senior Wimbledon campaign in confident fashion, beating Eastbourne finalist Vera Douchevina of Russia 6-4, 6-3.

In a match that did not begin until 7.30pm local time, Ana started brilliantly. She raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to a flurry of crushing groundstrokes. She continued to seize control of most rallies, crunching myriad forehand winners and moving the Russian all around the court on her way to clinching the first set 6-4. “I was pretty happy with my game today,” said Ana.

“It was tough because it was first match on a grass court, first match since Paris. I’m pretty happy with how I played, although my serve wasn’t going very well today. [But] I put her under pressure on the returns.”

Though she was unable to maintain such a strong start, Ana never looked like losing the match, even when Douchevina broke early in the second set. Ana levelled things immediately and went on to win comfortably.

Ana did not appear to be suffering from any effects of the back injury that forced her to miss Eastbourne last week. She ran down several balls during the match, which lasted one-and-a-quarter hours.

“It’s very good, nothing to worry about,” she said about the ailment.
