Ana showed all her fighting qualities as she somehow saw off the challenge of Ukrainian world No.43 Elina Svitolina 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(1) in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open.
Ana began her Indian Wells campaign in uncertain fashion and Svitolina's greater consistency saw her take the opening set.
Ana was down a break in the second set, and looked to be heading out, but she levelled and then broke again to take it 7-5.
Just when it looked like Ana might use the momentum to push on and clinch the third set convincingly, Svitolina showed remarkable powers of recovery to stay with the world No.13.
The Ukrainian's brilliant defence enabled her to move ahead 4-3 with a break. She served for the match twice, but both times Ana broke back.
The 2008 champion then played an excellent tiebreak, dominating from mid-court.
Ana's two hours and 29 minutes victory sets up a third round clash with either American Sloane Stephens or Croatia's Alja Tomljanovic.
