Ana vs Arvidsson

Ana takes on Sofia Arvidsson in the first round of the UNICEF Open in 's-Hertogenbosch on Monday. The match is scheduled as the second of the day on Centre Court, and should begin sometime after 12.30pm local time (6.30am Eastern Time).

It will be Ana’s third appearance in the Netherlands, after making it into the quarter-finals in both 2006 and 2007. She holds a 3-1 head-to-head advantage over the Swedish 26-year-old.

The tournament marks the start of the 22-year-old’s grass season, which reaches its climax on the sacred grounds of Wimbledon in just over a week. Indeed, the grass court season is over almost in the blink of an eye.

Of course, with Ana being a UNICEF ambassador, it is a great opportunity to compete in a tournament that bears the name of the charity organisation. It’s the first time that UNICEF has given its name to this tournament, which was formerly known as the Ordina Open over the past years.

To commemorate this historic occasion the tournament has launched several fun initiatives, among them an invitation to players to wear special UNICEF blue shoe laces: as well as raising the profile of the charitable organization, tournament arrangers will make a donation for each match a player wears them.

Ana is not the only former world No.1 participating in ‘s-Hertogenbosch: four-time Roland Garros champion Justine Henin is also among the 32-woman draw, while Dinara Safina lost in the opening round on Sunday.

32-year-old Tamarine Tanasugarn is attempting to defend her title for the second year in a row; including qualifying, the veteran Thai is on a 12-match winning streak in Rosmalen.
