Career best ranking

Ana has reached her highest ever singles ranking. In the latest Sony Ericsson WTA tour lists, published today, the 18-year-old has risen two places to world No.13.

“It’s always nice to reach your highest ranking,” said Ana. “It’s just a shame I cannot compete this week to try to move even closer to the top 10.”

The jump is due to the fact that Anastasia Myskina (absent through injury in Moscow last week) and Francesca Schiavone (second round defeat) have lost the points they gained at last year’s Kremlin Cup. Ana overtakes them both.

Ana takes Lindsay Davenport’s old position of 13, but will not be able to maintain her high ranking due to her withdrawal from the Zurich Open because of injury - Ana will lose the 135 points she earned in Switzerland 12 months ago. She looks destined to be overtaken by both Jelena Jankovic and Anna Chakvetadze in next week’s list, though the youngster will herself move ahead of Davenport due to the American’s points decay.

Ana has dropped two places in the Porsche Race, where she now stands at 16. Her doubles ranking falls three places to No.53.

Elsewhere in the rankings, Chakvetadze has risen to a career-best ranking of 16, after a straight-sets win over compatriot Nadia Petrova in the Kremlin Cup Final. Patty Schnyder has taken over compatriot Martina Hingis’ eighth place. American teenager Vania King has jumped from 80 to 54 after her win in Bangkok.

The newly published Sony Ericsson WTA tour rankings also see Francesca Schiavone move down five places to No.17 and Mary Pierce falls 12 places to No.29.
