Ana into round three Jun 26th 2014

Ana secured a place in the third round of The Championships at Wimbledon after beating world No.66 Jie Zheng from China 6-4, 6-0 in impressive fashion. The 26-year-old produced a brilliant performance that included twenty winners and just nine unforced errors during the 61 minute match.

However, as it may have been predicted prior to the match, Zheng started brightly on court No.3: the Chinese held sweet memories from beating Ana at this event six years ago and she clearly entered today’s contest with confidence.

Ana takes on world No.66 Jie Zheng of China in the second round of The Championships at Wimbledon on Thursday. It will be the fifth meeting between the pair, with the head-to-head series tied at 2-2.

Zheng defeated Ana here in 2008, when Ana was the top seed. She added another victory in Beijing a few months later, but Ana won their last meeting convincingly - a 6-3, 6-0 win at the 2012 US Open.

Ana safely passed a tricky opening round match at the Wimbledon Championships with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 victory over Italy’s Francesca Schiavone. The world No.76 provided a stern test for the 11th  seed, who eventually prevailed in 96 minutes.

Ana takes on Italian world No.77 Francesca Schiavone in the first round of The Championships on Tuesday. It will be Ana's 10th Wimbledon campaign.

Ana leads the head-to-head series 6-0, with her first victory coming at the French Open in 2005, and the most recent being in Linz last year.

Both players are former French Open champions. Ana is enjoying her highest seeding at Wimbledon since 2008, while the Italian, who turns 34 today, is competing here for the 14th time.

If she reaches round two, Ana could face her 2008 conqueror here, Jie Zheng. Last year’s runner-up Sabine Lisicki is a possible opponent in the third round.

The pair visited Edgbaston Cricket Ground and took to the pitch at half-time in the Birmingham Bears vs Durham Jets match.

Ana rises to 11th Jun 16th 2014

Ana has climbed two places to 11th in the latest WTA Singles Rankings, which are published today.

The list will be used to determine the seedings for Wimbledon next week, which means that Ana will enjoy her highest seeding since 2008.

In the Road To Singapore, the standings that determine the eight qualifers for the WTA Finals, Ana rises to 6th.

Ana storms to Birmingham title Jun 15th 2014

Ana surged to the 14th tournament victory of her career as she clinched her first ever title on grass by beating Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-3, 6-2 in the final of the AEGON Classic in Birmingham.

It was a virtually flawless week for Ana, who dropped only 21 games in five straight-sets wins. She spent just five hours and 44 minutes on court, while the Premier $700,000 title is Ana's biggest since winning the French Open in 2008.
