Tough draw for Ana and Maria May 2nd 2006

Ana and Maria Kirilenko have been drawn to play top seeds Liezel Huber and Martina Navratilova in the first round of the J&S Cup doubles competition in Warsaw.

Huber is the current doubles world No.5, while 49-year-old Navratilova has won a record 174 doubles titles.

Were they to overcome the hugely experienced pairing, Ana and Maria would face either Iveta Benesova and Michaella Krajicek or Marta Domachowska and Janette Husarova. Russians Elena Likhovtseva and Anastasia Myskina are the third seeds and possible semi-final opponents.

Ana slips to No.20 May 2nd 2006

Ana has moved down three places in the latest Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings, which are published today. The fall comes as a result of the 88 points she accrued in last year’s J&S Cup being removed from her total.

Due to minor calendar changes, last year’s corresponding events took place 53 weeks ago, which is why Ana’s Warsaw points are removed. Whatever points she accrues in Poland this week will be offset by the removal of the one point she earned in Berlin last year.

Ana is pretty in pink Apr 27th 2006

Ana was one of the many players that voted for pink in last weekend’s unique poll of players to choose the official new colour of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas.

All players competing in last weekend’s ties, from the World Group to the Zonal competitions, were asked to choose between turquoise (blue), fuchsia (pink) and plum (purple).

“I like all three colours, I have played in all of them, but pink is my favourite,” said Ana.

Correction Apr 27th 2006

In the article entitled 'Ana scoops another award', we incorrectly stated that the Miss Fed Cup award was voted for by fans. It was actually decided by journalists covering the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group I in Bulgaria.

We apologise for the inaccuracy.
