In a repeat of the same match they played in the first round in Zurich Open last year, Ana’s first opponent in Zurich this year is Tatiana Golovin from France, currently ranked 23 on the WTA list.
Last year they played a very close match which Ana won 2:1, by sets 7-5, 6-7(2), 7-6(3). They played each other once again since then, this summer in Rome. Ana prevailed once again with a 2:0 win, by sets 6:3, 6:4.
If Ana beats Golovin for the third time in a row, Ana’s next opponent will be the winner of the match between Alicia Molik (AUS) and Jelena Jankovic (SCG).
On Saturday 15 October the Zurich Open begins a new era, when the first ball is struck in Zürich’s newly renovated city indoor arena, the Hallenstadion. The $1.3m tournament, the most important European indoor event on the WTA Tour, will be the first international sporting event staged in the 21st century venue.
Last year in Zurich Ana won three qualifying matches, followed by a great win against Tatiana Golovin in the main draw.
Ana also held set points in both tie-breaks against quarter-final opponent Venus Williams. That was Ana's first career quarterfinal.
The teams were drawn into two groups on Tuesday with Russian, the United States, Belarus and Serbia and Montenegro in Group A and Argentina, Australia, Germany and China or the Netherlands in Group B.
Ana and Novak Djokovic will represent Serbia and Montenegro.
"We like to unearth new talent. This year weve got Ana Ivanovic and Viktoria Azarenka. No-one has seem them here before but they are on the way to the top 10 in the world these two girls," Tournament director Paul McNamee said.
Ana withdrew from the Kremlin Cup. She is still not fully recovered from the shoulder injury and in consultation with doctors and the team Ana has decided to withdraw.
Ana was very much looking forward to play in Moscow but unfortunately it is not going to happen this year.
Ana has a monumental fight on her hands trying to go through the first two rounds on the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. In the first round Ana will face the rapidly rising Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany. Groenefeld reached the finals in Beijing and Luxembour in the past month.
In the second round we are all awaiting a great match-up against the number one seed and the current world number one, Maria Sharapova.
“She handles herself so well. She’s so graceful, elegant and so positive – like Sharapova in many ways. Ivanovic is almost like the Catherine Zeta-Jones of the tennis world. She’s like a princess on the court: so feminine and yet so powerful with
Patty Schnyder had straight-set win against Ana on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Porsche Grand Prix.
Schnyder converted her fourth match point to beat Serbia-Montenegro's Ivanovic, who has risen from 97th to 18th in the rankings this year, in 53 minutes.
Known for her aggressive style, Ivanovic made twice as many unforced errors (26-13) as her opponent and often followed a volleyed winner with an easy miss.
After having a few weeks off due to shoulder injury, Ana will be back in action at the $650,000 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix tournament in Filderstadt, Germany starting on Monday.
Ana is in top half of the draw in the tournament which features most of the top ranked WTA players including Lindsay Davenport, Kim Clijsters and Justine Heni- Hardenne. Ana will face the number 7 seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland in the first round.
