Off-form Ana ousted in Beijing

Ana’s run at the China Open in Beijing ended in the third round as she was beaten 6-4, 6-3 by Swiss world No.69 Romina Oprandi. The 11th seed could just occasionally perform at her normal level and never seemed comfortable on court during the 72 minutes of play.

Even in the very first game of the match, the omens were rather unfavourable for Ana. She faced two break points, which she cleared away, but was unable to put her stamp on the rallies. This pattern continued in what was to be frank a quite dreadful performance by Ana.

The 24-year-old kept pace with the Swiss till 3-3, but could not resist a first break as more and more unforced errors slipped into her game. Ana managed to level again in the following game, but another slack service game gave Oprandi the opportunity to close out the first set.

The second set didn't bring about the revolution that Ana and her supporters craved. She appeared sluggish and her timing was completely off, netting the majority of the balls.

The Swiss, on the other hand, looked confident, defended very well and took full advantage of the plentiful unforced errors from Ana’s racket. Combined with an overall service winning percentage of just 49, it was no surprise that Oprandi took a two-break lead and got to serve for the match.

The former world No. 1 snatched back one break but eventually lost the next game as she hit four more unforced errors.
