Free week for players

Free week for players

There is no action on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour this week. Instead, a Free Week was scheduled in order to give players the chance to rest and recharge their batteries ahead of the gruelling clay and grass court seasons.

Central to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour’s plans for the future of the sport, known as Roadmap 2010, is to give the players longer rest periods. Already the off-season has been expanded to seven weeks and this week’s hiatus is an extension of that.

Commenting about the Free Week, Ana said: “I think it’s good. I have three consecutive tournaments coming up so it is good to rest now mentally, especially after the Fed Cup.”

The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour said that in future years a mid-season break of up to two weeks could be scheduled.
