Ana beat Russian world No.32 Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome. The former world No.1 raised a few eyebrows around the Foro Italico with an almost impeccable performance. She triumphed in just 66 minutes and was never once taken to deuce on her own serve.
Ana immediately found a solid level, winning her opening service game to love. With superb power play and great defence from Ana, Vesnina had no answer during the first set. The 22-year-old dominated, pushing her opponent back behind the baseline.
The 23-year-old Russian raised her level during the second set, but Ana remained in control, thanks to a flurry of aggressive forehand and some impressive, powerful serving.
Speaking immediately after the match, Ana was pleased with the level of her game : “It was a tough match, it’s good to be back here at Rome, the crowd was amazing tonight," she said.
"Now, we are working to progress back to the top 10. With good times, bad times, but for the moment I’m happy how everything is going and hope to be back soon.”
Ana will face Belorussian Victoria Azarenka in the second round on Tuesday, after the world No.10 defeated Sesil Karatantcheva 6-1, 6-3.
The match is scheduled as the fourth of the day on the Pallacorda court, and is expected to begin sometime after 5.30pm local time (11.30am Eastern Time). Click here for live point-by-point scoring from the Foro Italico.
