Ana produced a dominant performance to beat world No.26 Tatiana Golovin 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the Rogers Cup. After losing the first game Ana was never behind in the match, which lasted an hour and 20 minutes.
The match was delayed by 30 minutes due to rain. When it did start, the opening two games went with serve until Ana took her third break point opportunity to move 2-1 ahead.
The 18-year-old, who is in her third straight week of competition in both singles and doubles, added another break but was herself broken while serving for the first set at 5-2. But she made no mistake at the second time of asking and sealed the opening set 6-4.
Ana missed a break point in the Frenchwoman’s opening service game of set two but clinched a break in the third game to move 2-1 ahead. Ana broke again at 4-2 and comfortably served out the match to seal her fifth straight win over Golovin.
Ana will play the winner of the Jie Zheng-Catalina Castano match in the second round on Wednesday.
Monday’s play in Montreal saw the start of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour’s on-court coaching trial.
