Injury enforces Hopman Cup withdrawal

Ana has been forced to withdraw from the Hyundai Hopman Cup due to a strained abdominal muscle. The 23-year-old suffered the injury during her defeat to Justine Henin on Thursday and, after attempting to practise on Friday morning, a tearful Ana made the regrettable decision.

"I'm so disappointed to pull out of the Hyundai Hopman Cup," said Ana.

"To withdraw from any match is extremely frustrating, but to have to do so for a final is really hard. The season is just starting and it's very unfortunate that this has happened now.

"Despite this injury it's been such a fun week, and I want to thank all the organizers for everything they did for me, and the fans for their incredible support. I'll be back for sure."

Under tournament rules, teams can only replace injured players during the group stages so Belgium, who finished second in Group A, will advance to the final in Serbia's place.

"We fought hard to get here and we had a chance in the final and I felt really bad for Novak," added Ana.
