LA run ended by Jankovic

Ana was beaten 6-4, 7-6 in the quarter-finals of the JPMorgan Chase Open by world No.28 Jelena Jankovic. It was a sea-saw battle, with the Serbian No.2 coming from a break down in both sets.

Ana made another fast start. She saved two break points in her opening service game but then broke to 15 before holding to clinch a 3-0 lead.

Jankovic then reeled off five straight games to lead 5-3, as Ana’s serve failed to function as well as it had in the earlier rounds. Both players then held serve as Jankovic, serving at 72 per cent, took the opening set 6-4.

The opening five games of the second set all went with serve – Ana missed one break point – until the 18-year-old broke in the sixth game to lead 4-2. She led 40-15 in the following game but Jankovic replied strongly to get back on terms.

Just as she had in the first set, Jankovic came from a break behind to lead by a break as she won the next two games and served for the match at 5-4. With her back against the wall, Ana broke and the set went into a tiebreak.

Jankovic scored a decisive mini-break to lead 3-2 but a double fault let Ana back in before further mini-breaks were exchanged. Ana saved a match point when serving at 5-6 but Jankovic won the next and clinched victory after an hour and 37 minutes.

Ana will now team up with Maria Kirilenko in the second round of the doubles competition. They face third seeds Daniela Hantuchova and Ai Sugiyama.
