The latest Power Index results from Los Angeles are in and, as forecasted, Ana’s power game registered high in the final standings. Ana, the tournament champion, finished third with an overall score of 95.6 mph, which was unmistakably attributable to her booming first serve and monstrous forehand.
Surprisingly, unseeded Russian Yaroslova Shvedova, who earlier in the year scored an upset victory over Ana in Miami, finished first in the Los Angeles ratings at 102.9 mph, which further establishes her as the front-runner in the cumulative rankings. Shvedova lost in the first round and is currently ranked 71st in the world, demonstrating that pure power hitting does not necessarily guarantee overt success.
Another Russian Maria Kirilenko, who lost to Ana in the quarterfinals, and who astounded many by placing second on the San Diego Power Index, finished seventh in Los Angeles with a rating of 93.5 mph. However, Kirilenko still sits in third place overall.
Maria Sharapova, who withdrew from Los Angeles just before her semi-final match against Nadia Petrova, finished in tenth place with a score of 91.0 mph. Interestingly, Sharapova’s similar rating of 90.5 in San Diego, where Sharapova won her first title of the year, was good enough for fourth place there.
