Ana’s second round match against world No.55 Amy Frazier at the Acura Classic has been scheduled as the second on the stadium court today. It is expected to begin sometime after 11.30am local time (8.30pm Central European Time).
Thankfully the weather has cooled somewhat in San Diego in recent days. Today’s forecasted high temperature is just 77 degrees Fahrenheit.
Ana has played the 33-year-old American once before – in her debut match on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in Vienna two years ago when she lost 6-4, 6-1. It happens to be the event at which she first met her new coach David Taylor.
Including qualifying, Frazier has won two matches in each of her last three events: Wimbledon, Cincinnati last week and here in San Diego. She beat world No.26 Tatiana Golovin 6-3,7-6 in the first round yesterday, so clearly she is in good form.
Frazier’s ranking peaked at No.13 in 1995 and she has won eight main tour singles titles. She was a quarter-finalist here two years ago.
Since losing to Venus Williams in Zurich at the end of 2004, Ana has won all of her last five matches against Americans in straight sets.
Should she win, Ana will face either third seeded Russian Nadia Petrova or Anna Chakvetadze in round three tomorrow.
