In a surprise selection by captain Dejan Vranes, Serbia's No.1-ranked player Jelena Jankovic has been left out of the team to face the Slovak Republic on day one of the Fed Cup World Group Play-Off. Consequently, Ana is installed as the Serbian No.1 and meets Daniela Hantuchova in the tie's second rubber.
Bojana Jovanovski, the 19-year-old who played a pivotal role in Serbia's 3-2 victory over Canada in the last round, comes in as the visitors' No.2 player and takes on Slovakian No.1 Dominika Cibulkova in the first rubber in Bratislava.
According to the event's official website, no explanation was apparently given by Vranes regarding the surprise dropping of world No.8 Jankovic, although his Slovakian counterpart Matej Liptak speculated: "I don’t know what the reason is – maybe it’s some injury, sickness – I don’t know - maybe tactics."
Jankovic herself said: "For now I respect the captain’s decision...The most important thing is that we support each other.”
Changes can be made for Sunday's matches, but presently Ana is set to take on Cibulkova in the third rubber, with Jovanovski facing Hantuchova in rubber number four. Jankovic and Aleksandra Krunic have been named as Serbia's doubles team and are scheduled to face Hantuchova and Magdalena Rybarikova.
Play gets underway at the Sibamac Arena on Saturday at 2pm Central European Time (8am Eastern Time).
