Ana and Maria Kirilenko won their first round doubles match at the Ordina Open. The teenage pairing beat third seeds Eleni Daniilidou and Anabel Medina Garrigues 7-5, 6-4.
They will play the Czech team of Gabriela Navratilova and Vladimira Uhlirova in the quarter-finals tomorrow, Tuesday.
This is the third tournament that Ana and Maria have played together this year: they reached the semi-finals of both the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo and the J&S Cup in Warsaw.
Ana's second round singles match against Iveta Benesova will take place on Wednesday.
Ana moves up one place to No.22 in the latest Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings, which are published today. The rise is a result of Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy falling four places.
In the Porsche Race, which determines the eight qualifiers for the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships, Ana is also ranked 22nd. Meanwhile, her doubles ranking falls two places to No.92.
The only change within the singles top 20 sees Lindsay Davenport and Svetlana Kuznetsova swap positions, with the American moving up one place to No.6.
Ana is through to the second round of the Ordina Open after beating former world No.8 Alicia Molik 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in her first grass court outing of the season.
“It was a tough match today,” said Ana. “The first match on grass is always tricky. I knew that she has a very good serve and can play well on grass.
“I was very focussed in the first set and serving well, but I dropped my serve at the beginning of the second set and made some errors.
Ana has been drawn to face Australian Alicia Molik in the first round of the Ordina Open. The tie is scheduled as the first match on Centre Court at 12pm Central European Time today, which means that Ana is effectively opening the tournament in s’Hertogenbosch.
Despite Molik’s ranking of 256, it is a very tricky draw for Ana: the Australian was ranked as high as No.8 16 months ago, before suffering an inner-ear infection that has since seen her play only sporadically on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
Seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander has given a ringing endorsement of Ana’s credentials. Speaking exclusively to this website, the Swede said: “I think she’s great. It’s a matter of her breaking through.”
Wilander, who now commentates for Eurosport and ESPN, continued: “I commentated on her match against [Amelie] Mauresmo at the French Open last year. I think for her the challenge is not mental or stroke-wise, it’s a matter of whether she can move as well as the other girls.
jonathan crawford: how long are you planning to stay pro just wondering what you have to say Thanks
Ana: Hey Jonathan. It’s so hard to predict. Definitely tennis is my life now and I think I will play as long as I’m fit. Regards, Ana.
Goran: Does it ever bother you when you travel overseas and the weather is completely different at your destination, and does the time difference from country to country effect your sleep?
Leni: hey ana! i just have a short question - do you apply some make-up when you´re on the court? anyway, you look beautiful! love, leni
Ana: Hey Leni. No, I do not wear make-up on the court. I prefer the natural look. Thanks for the compliment. Regards, Ana.
Jean: Hello Ana! My question is: Do you have any bad habits? Thank you for taking the time to read my question! P.S. I love you... in a non-creepy way :D
Ana: Hey Jean. I am not sure. Maybe I can be a little bit mean to my family sometimes! I can be quite stubborn! Regards, Ana.
Ana has dropped two places to No.23 in the latest Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings, which are published today. The lists reflect players’ performances at Roland Garros, where Ana reached the third round compared to last year’s quarter-final appearance.
Ana’s defeat to tenth seed Anastasia Myskina saw her lose a total of 112 points. Consequently Maria Kirilenko, Nathalie Dechy and Ai Sugiyama have overtaken her, while Elena Likhovtseva falls behind all four players.
