Ask Ana #36 Nov 20th 2006

san diego j.: Ana, I’ve been playing for about 20 years, and I still frequently have days where I feel like I can't get anything right and it seems like every ball lands a few inches long. So I was wondering if, at your level, you still have those days on the court when absolutely nothing goes right. Thanks! You’re beautiful!

Video highlights - Ana vs Venus Nov 18th 2006

Over the next month or so we will be screening highlights of some of Ana's most memorable matches. Where better place to start than the 2004 Zurich Open second round match between Ana and Venus Williams?

For many, this was the match in which Ana first caught the eye – it was only her third Sony Ericsson WTA Tour tournament. Aged just 16 and ranked No.156, she went toe-to-toe with the then world No.11 and winner of four Grand Slam titles during two absorbing tiebreak sets.

The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour this week announced rule changes aimed at reducing the frequency of player withdrawals. Having admitted that injury-enforced pullouts have reached a new high this season, the Tour has moved to eradicate the problem.

Two of the five measures agreed at the Tour’s board meeting in Madrid this week are only applicable to those who have been competing for 12 years or more, or those aged 30 and above. The changes that affect Ana are:

Rankings and 2007 Tour calendar Nov 13th 2006

The final Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings list of 2006 confirms that Ana finishes the season at No.14, up two places from her year-end position in 2005.

However, that does not do justice to the improvement Ana made this season: by default she dropped from 16 to 21 in the first week of 2006 after the Tour abolished quality points. So in real terms the 19-year-old climbed seven spots during the season.

Ana finished 15th in the Porsche Race, while her season-ending doubles ranking is 52.

Changes made to tentative 2007 schedule Nov 11th 2006

Ana has changed her provisional schedule for 2007. She now plans to play in the Medibank International in Sydney, which begins on 9 January. The other alteration sees Ana again competing in the Ordina Open in 's-Hertogenbosch (beginning June 17), rather than in the Hastings Direct International Championship in Eastbourne during the same week.

The schedule is still provisional and could change again. We will of course keep you informed of any alterations.
