Ana is through to the second round of the Acura Classic after a resounding 6-2, 6-1 win over world No.62 Akiko Morigami.
Playing her first match under the guidance of new coach David Taylor, and her first ever in San Diego, Ana outplayed the Japanese 26-year-old. Ana won 73 points to her opponents’ 52 and was not broken throughout the 72 minute match.
"It was a good start [to the tournament]," said Ana. "I think that I moved well and my groundstrokes were efficient. I was also pleased with my serve.
"Maybe the score doesn't show it but it was a good quality match. There were lots of long points and great rallies. She served well and her double-handed backhand is dangerous and difficult to anticipate."
The 18-year-old will face Amy Frazier tomorrow after the American beat Tatiana Golovin 6-3, 7-6.
Ana is in doubles action alongside Maria Kirilenko today. They face the Ukrainian sister pairing of Alona and Katerina Bondarenko. The match is scheduled as the third on Court 2 and is expected to start sometime after 1.30pm local time (10.30pm Central European Time).
Should they win that match, the teenagers will play third seeds Daniela Hantuchova and Ai Sugiyama, who receive a bye into the second round.
