Updated: Na Li test for Ana

Ana has been drawn to play China’s Na Li in the first round of the Qatar Telecom German Open, which begins on Monday. It will be Ana’s first meeting with the world No.70, who was runner-up in this week’s Estoril Open.

The 24-year-old Chinese player has been in top form this week, thrashing all four of her opponents on her way to the final in Portugal. She has beaten players of the calibre of Daniela Hantuchova and Flavia Pennetta this year, so she represents a greater challenge than her ranking would suggest. However, the Chinese retired due to pain in her thigh during the Estoril final, so her appearance in Berlin must be in some doubt.

Were Ana to beat Na Li she would face either Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson or a qualifier in the second round. The tournament is a Tier I event featuring 56 players, which means that there is a third round that precedes the quarter-finals.

Ana is the 12th seed and could play world No.14 Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the last 16. Patty Schnyder, whom Ana beat for the first time in Warsaw this week, is a possible quarter-final opponent, while second seed Nadia Petrova is a potential semi-final adversary.

Top seed for the $1,340million event is world No.1 Amelie Mauresmo. 12 of the world’s top 20 are present, making it one of the strongest line-ups of the year.
