With the 2006 US Open just three days away, we take a look back at Ana’s performances at last year’s event
Round one – beat Lindsay Lee-Waters 7-6, 6-3
Ana’s preparations for her senior debut in New York were hit when she sustained a shoulder injury in Toronto just a fortnight earlier. Doctors passed her fit to play, but she was restricted by the pain and could not exert herself fully, especially on serve. Nevertheless, Ana showed great fight and overcame the American in straight sets. “It wasn’t a high quality match but at the end of the day I’m happy I took my opportunities,” she said.
Round two – Lost to Maria Vento-Kabchi 3-6, 7-5, 6-1
Ana’s injury caught up with her. It worsened during the match and she was unable to get any purchase on her serves in the final two sets. She dominated the beginning of the match, but her restricted movement allowed the Venezuelan to hit back and she came through in three sets. “It was so tough for me to serve,” said Ana afterwards. “Every time I had a high forehand I was thinking about the shoulder." She also paid credit to Vento-Kabchi: "She put me under pressure. She was hitting the ball deep and didn’t give me much chance."
Reflecting on last year’s performances, Ana said yesterday: “Last year was very frustrating, but I learnt so much from the experience. It makes me even more determined to do well this year.”
