Should Ana pass Makarova, she will face either Swiss Timea Bacsinszky or Zheng Jie of China in the second round.
13th seed Marion Bartoli is a possible opponent in the third round, while defending Champion Kim Clijsters could await in the fourth.
If Ana reaches the quarter-finals, conceivable adversaries are French Open finalist Samantha Stosur and Olympic Champion Elena Dementieva.
Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams is a possible semi-final opponent.
Ana is in the opposite half of the draw to top-seed Caroline Wozniacki and former Russian winners Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova, so she cannot face any of them until the final.
