The powerful American doubles combination of Lisa Raymond and Taylor Dent notched an impressive first-up victory in the $1-million ITF mixed teams championship when they downed newcomers Serbia & Montenegro two rubbers to one at Perth’s Burswood Dome.
After the singles had been split, with Serbia’s rising young star Ana Ivanovic beating Raymond and Dent levelling up with a similarly-impressive win over Novak Djokovic, the mixed doubles went USA’s way,7-6 (7/3), 6-2.
The singles saw two impressive sides to two teams of Hopman Cup newcomers, with Ivanovic, who has risen to 16 in the world, playing well to lead 6-2 and 4-1 against Raymond, with two services for the match. But she faltered a little with nerves in her first match before composing herself to claim the second set 6-4.
