The latest news about Ana!

Ana happy with start Jun 28th 2007

After her 6-0 7-6 first round victory over Melinda Czink, Ana was in hopeful mood about the fortnight ahead and her grasscourt form, following her brilliant run at Roland Garros.

"My serve, it's working really well at the moment. I worked a lot on it. I'm improving my volleys. But it's a different game than on the clay. It's important for every player to adjust the best they can. I think I can do well."

Ana sinks Czink Jun 27th 2007

Ana smoothly progressed to the second round of the Championships with a 6-0 7-6 (7-3) victory over Hungarian Melinda Czink in 84 minutes.

It was a packed Court 18 that greeted Ana in the first match of her Wimbledon campaign, and she showed little sign of rustiness, racing quickly into a 2-0 lead after breaking Czink in the second game.

Ana's typically powerful serving and forceful grounstrokes dominated the unsettled Hungarian, and the first set was wrapped up 6-0 in just 19 minutes after another misfired forehand from Czink sailed long.

Ana set for lunchtime start Jun 26th 2007

Ana's first round match against Melinda Czink is scheduled to take place at 12pm local time (7am Eastern Time) on Court 18 on Wednesday. The tie was originally scheduled as last of the day on Tuesday but was mysteriously cancelled - and replaced with a men's match.

Ana has a 2-0 head-to-head record against Czink. She beat the Hungarian world No.133 in qualifying in Canberra two-and-a-half years ago by a scoreline of 6-1, 6-3. Bizarrely, after Czink entered the draw as a lucky loser, they met again in the final. This time Ana beat the 24-year-old 7-5, 6-1.

Wimbledon seeds guide Jun 23rd 2007

We profile some of the players Ana might come up against over the next fortnight:

1. Justine Henin
Following the successful defence of her Roland Garros and Eastbourne titles, the world No.1 arrives at this year’s Wimbledon hoping to win the only major title missing from her resume. Last year Henin equaled her achievement of 2001 by reaching the final, but once again she fell short in the deciding match. She is currently on an 11-match winning streak and will take some stopping.

2. Maria Sharapova

Ana made her senior Wimbledon debut in 2005, entering the tournament seeded 19th. Following her quarterfinal appearance at Roland Garros only a few weeks’ earlier, high expectations surrounded Ana as she headed into her first round match against Eastbourne finalist Vera Douchevina.

Czink first for Ana Jun 22nd 2007

Ana has been drawn to face world No.137 Melinda Czink in the opening round of the Championships, which begin at Wimbledon on Monday. The 19-year-old is seeded sixth for the third Grand Slam tournament of 2007.

Ana has played the Hungarian twice before - bizarrely, both matches took place in the same tournament. Ana defeated the 24-year-old 6-1, 6-3 in qualifying in Canberra three years ago, then beat her 7-5, 6-1 in the final after Czink had got into the main draw as a lucky loser.

Ana loses in Holland Jun 22nd 2007

Ana bowed out of the Ordina Open after a 6-3, 6-1 defeat to world No.10 Daniela Hantuchova.

The 19-year-old was tied 3-3 with the Slovakian but was broken in the seventh game and thereafter never performed to anything like her usual standard as the match raced away from her.

Ana will now head to London for the Championships at Wimbledon, which begin on Monday. She is seeded sixth for the year's third Grand Slam.

Ana starts grass season with win Jun 19th 2007

Ana beat world No.44 Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 7-6, 6-2 in the second round of the Ordina Open in Holland. The 19-year-old served nine aces as she clinched victory in her first match on grass in almost a year.

Ana, who is seeded second, was on top in the opening set before taking it 7-4 on a tiebreak.

She sealed a break in the second game of the second set and moved 3-0 ahead. She added a further break as Daniilidou served to stay in the match.
