Ana to face Gagliardi Jun 23rd 2006

Ana has been drawn to play Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi in the first round of the Championships, which begin on Monday. Ana has never before played the world No.119, who has twice reached the third round at Wimbledon.

Should she overcome the Swiss, Ana will face either Marta Domachowska of Poland, whom she beat at the J&S Cup in Warsaw two months ago, or British wild card Sarah Borwell. Ana's scheduled third round opponent is No.14 seeded Russian Dinara Safina, while top seed Amelie Mauresmo awaits in round four.

Ana reaches first doubles final Jun 23rd 2006

Ana exacted swift revenge on Elena Dementieva, who had beaten her in the singles quarter-finals earlier in the day. Ana and Maria Kirilenko defeated second seeds Dementieva and Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to reach their first final together.

The teeangers will have their work cut out in the decider: they face the top seeded Chinese pairing of Zi Yan and Jie Zheng.

Ana defeated by Dementieva Jun 22nd 2006

Ana lost 7-6, 6-4 to top seed Elena Dementieva in the quarter-finals of the Ordina Open.

It is Ana's last singles match before Wimbledon, which begins on Monday.

Ana seeded 20th for Wimbledon Jun 22nd 2006

Ana is seeded No.20 for the 2006 Championships. She is scheduled to face a player seeded between nine and 16 in the third round.

Ana’s seeding is two positions above her world ranking due to the injury-enforced withdrawals of Lindsay Davenport and Mary Pierce.

The All England Club uses a subjective seeding policy and has elevated reigning champion Venus Williams from her world ranking of 12 to a seeding of seventh. However, that is the only change: the 32 seeds otherwise follow the current Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings.

Ana into quarter-finals Jun 21st 2006

Ana is through to the quarter-finals of the Ordina Open after beating world No.50 Iveta Benesova 6-3, 7-5.

She will play top seed Elena Dementieva in the last eight tomorrow. The Russian beat Elena Vesnina 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. It will be the second meeting between the pair: Dementieva beat Ana 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a highly entertaining quarter-final at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells in March of this year.

Another doubles win Jun 20th 2006

Ana and Maria Kirilenko eased to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Gabriela Navratilova and Vladimira Uhlirova in the quarter-finals of the Ordina Open.

The teenagers' opponents, in their third consecutive semi-final together, are not yet known.

Ana plays Iveta Benesova in the second round of the singles competition tomorrow.

They will play the Czech team of Gabriela Navratilova and Vladimira Uhlirova in the quarter-finals tomorrow, Tuesday.

This is the third tournament that Ana and Maria have played together this year: they reached the semi-finals of both the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo and the J&S Cup in Warsaw.

Ana's second round singles match against Iveta Benesova will take place on Wednesday.

Ana climbs to No.22 Jun 19th 2006

Ana moves up one place to No.22 in the latest Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings, which are published today. The rise is a result of Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy falling four places.

In the Porsche Race, which determines the eight qualifiers for the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships, Ana is also ranked 22nd. Meanwhile, her doubles ranking falls two places to No.92.

The only change within the singles top 20 sees Lindsay Davenport and Svetlana Kuznetsova swap positions, with the American moving up one place to No.6.

Updated: Ana advances to round two Jun 18th 2006

Ana is through to the second round of the Ordina Open after beating former world No.8 Alicia Molik 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in her first grass court outing of the season.

“It was a tough match today,” said Ana. “The first match on grass is always tricky. I knew that she has a very good serve and can play well on grass.

“I was very focussed in the first set and serving well, but I dropped my serve at the beginning of the second set and made some errors.

Ana to open Ordina Open Jun 18th 2006

Ana has been drawn to face Australian Alicia Molik in the first round of the Ordina Open. The tie is scheduled as the first match on Centre Court at 12pm Central European Time today, which means that Ana is effectively opening the tournament in s’Hertogenbosch.

Despite Molik’s ranking of 256, it is a very tricky draw for Ana: the Australian was ranked as high as No.8 16 months ago, before suffering an inner-ear infection that has since seen her play only sporadically on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
