A week before the start of the US Open, Ana is due to enter the final Grand Slam of the season holding the number 18 position on the WTA rankings.
Ana moved up to a career-best 18th place in the latest WTA ranking released today. Ana climbed up one places from her previous best 19th after she reached the third round of a Tier I WTA event in Toronto, where she bowed out, due to injury, to the tournament winner Kim Clijsters.
Ana withdrew from the tournament on Thursday after sustaining a right pectoral muscle strain on Wednesday. Her withdrawal gave No.7 seed Kim Clijsters a spot in the quarterfinals.
Ana's statement: "It hurt during the doubles match (Wednesday) night, the best thing I can do now is to get treatment and hopefully be ready for the U.S. Open."
After in excess of 5 hours of exhausting and exhilarating tennis yesterday, Ana goes on to face Kim Clijsters, the No. 7 seed, who last made quick work of France's Virginie Razzano winning 6-3, 6-0. The match is scheduled as a third match on the center court.
Ana overcame a poor start to beat Marion Bartoli 4-6, 7-6(5),7-6(3) in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
Ana lost the first set but showed familiar guile and resolve to hit back against her French opponent. Ana will next meet Kim Clijsters or Virginie Razzano.
Ana began the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Tuesday with a hard fought first-round win over Tatiana Garbin of Italy, 6-2 7-6.
Ana will now face Marion Bartoli of France in the second round.
Ana’s first opponent on this Tier I event is Tatiana Garbin from Italy, ranked 66th in the world. Garbin had to play qualifications to make it in the main draw. Ana never played her before.
Ana is fit and ready to restart her season. This is her debut in Toronto but she is undoubtedly going to do well. Her preparations in Zurich went very well. It was hard work, especially in the beginning. Ana worked a lot on her serve, because she wants to make new personal record (at Wimbledon she served 123mph, which was the fastest serve of the tournament).
The draw for the 2005 Rogers Cup edition at Toronto was released on Saturday August 14. Ana is seeded 12th and she will face Kveta Peschke in the 1st round.
Ana is in the top half of the draw and may possibly face Kim Clijsters in the 3rd round, Svetlana Kuznetsova in the 4th round, and Maria Sharapova or Serena Williams in the semi final.
This week Ana moved up one place to #19 in the in the world ranking released by the Women's Tennis Association on Monday. Ana did not play since Wimbledon because she is still under age restrictions.
Ana can boost her position further in Toronto next week.
After reaching 3rd round in her debut at Wimbledon, Ana entered the top 20 ranking for the first time.
Ana started the year ranked 97th and began the season by winning her first Tour singles title at Canberra as a qualifier. She reached her first Tier I quarter final at Miami, reached her first career Tier II semi final at Warsaw and reached quarter finals in her debut appearance at Roland Garros.
