It has been a mighty strong second set Oct 26th 2005

Eighth-seeded Ana advanced to the second round of the Generali Ladies Open with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory Tuesday over Shinobu Asagoe.

They exchanged breaks in the first set, but Ana wasted two set points at 6-5 before prevailing in the tiebreaker.

Ana reduced her unforced errors and improved her serve percentage in the second set, breaking the Japanese player three times to claim the match.

Ana will meet either Austrian wild card Tamira Paszek or Russian qualifier Elena Vesnina in the second round.

After reaching her first Tier I semi-final in Zurich Open last week, Ana’s rankings went up 5 places. Ana is now 17th.

Ana is scheduled to play in the Generali Ladies Linz which starts today. She will play will play Shinobu Asagoe of Japan in the first round. If Ana gets through she will face Paszek Tamira (wc) or a qualifier in the second round.

Next stop Linz Oct 23rd 2005

Next tournament, Generali Ladies Linz presented by Raiffeisenlandesbank in Linz. In the first round Ana will play Shinobu Asagoe of Japan.

Ana has played Asagoe once before, in Luxembourg 2004 and won 4-6 6-4 6-1. Asagoe is currently ranked 34th in the world.

Battling Ana lost in Zurich Oct 22nd 2005

Ana went out of the Zurich Open to Patty Schnyder in two sets despite finding something close to her best form in the previous two matches on tournament.

The Swiss won 6-2 6-1 after seeing off a fight back from Ana, who looked sharp in the beginning but Schnyder never allowed Ana to get her game going.

It was the second time in the past month that Scnhyder had beaten Ana, following her victory in Fielderstadt a few weeks ago.

Ana reached her first Tier One semi-final Oct 22nd 2005

Ivanovic, a 17-year-old from Serbia-Montenegro, closed out the first set with a second-serve ace before pulling away and breaking Srebotnik's serve three times to take the second.

Srebotnik, who upset second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo in the second round, took a break for treatment halfway through the second set, but was unable to rally. Ivanovic then broke Srebotnik's serve to love to close out the match.

Ana powers into semis Oct 21st 2005

Ana cruised into her first Tier I semifinal with a 6-3 6-1 win over Slovenia’s Katarina Srebotnik.

Ana is easing back to top form. She dropped only seven games in her last two matches at the newly renovated Hallenstadion.

Ana goes on to face the winner of the match between Flavia Pennetta (ITA) and Patty Schnyder (SUI) on Saturday for a place in the final.

Ana is aiming for her second tournament victory this year.

Ana to play Srebotnik for a semi-final place Oct 21st 2005

The singles programme at Zurich Open today opens with Ana looking to build on a very impressive first full year on the tour.

She plays the conqueror of Amélie Mauresmo, the Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik. If she can beat the resurgent Slovenian, Ana will reach the semi-finals for the third time this year.

Ana sees off Jankovic threat Oct 21st 2005

It took her just 51 minutes to cruise past compatriot Jelena Jankovic. Ana dominated from the outset, breaking three times in the first set and twice in the second on her way to a 6-2 6-1 win.

Both players were able to trade huge ground strokes but Ana’s extra power and her improved movement gave her the edge.

She soon had a double break and absorbed the loss of her own serve comfortably, wrapping up the first set 6-2 and breaking at the start of the second.
